Thatch
Thatch is a timeless roof that offers a world of possibilities in both style and expression. The roof is sustainable and part of nature’s cycle, where a good and healthy indoor climate is a consequence of the roof’s abilities as an insulation material. With these qualities of thatch comes a natural pride in the craft for me..
“Well-executed Thatched Roof 2023” prepared by the Danish Thatchers’ Guild..
We primarily use the screw method in our thatching work, which was developed in the 80s by a Danish thatcher. The method is widespread in large parts of the world.
Advantages of thatch
There are several advantages to living under a thatched roof:
- It is not necessarily more expensive than other roof types
- Thatch is 100 percent biological
- The straw is an effective insulation material
- The roof is naturally ventilated and provides a healthy and good indoor climate
- Thatch is a green and environmentally friendly solution – for you and your house
Method
We select the straw based on the highest quality and in relation to the Danish climate.
The reeds are a natural material and will vary from harvest to harvest in both appearance and structure. To ensure your roof appears as uniform as possible, we review each and every bundle as part of our work process:
- Each bundle of straw is laid up by hand.
- Each bundle is cleaned and inspected.
- The straws are sorted based on where they will be placed on the roof.
- The straws are selected according to the environment and weather conditions around the property.
Quality assurance
The purpose of quality assurance is to prevent defects and failures in construction.
Quality assurance includes:
- Taking check measurements on the roof (measurements comply with “Well-executed Thatched Roof 2023” written by the Thatchers’ Guild)
- Ongoing inspection of building materials
- For larger projects, complete photo documentation of the construction process can be included. With the documentation, you as a customer are ensured transparency and visual insight into the project’s progress.
Maintenance plan
The purpose of the maintenance plan is to provide you as a customer with a plan and overview of points to be aware of in relation to the maintenance of the roof. If the plan is followed, the roof’s prerequisites for a longer lifespan are supported.
The maintenance plan includes:
- Specification of maintenance over a period of 50 years.
